New Zealand's agritech sector is experiencing a significant growth phase, characterized by substantial capital investments and a developing ecosystem focused on global expansion. This progress will be highlighted at Agritech Unleashed Auckland on Thursday, April 16. The event will convene founders, investors, and industry leaders to discuss the challenges and strategies involved in building, funding, and scaling agritech companies.
Brendan O’Connell, Chief Executive of AgriTech New Zealand, noted the increasing capital raises from companies such as Halter, Hectre, Agovor, Scanabull, and Scentian Bio, indicating a shift from potential to proven success. He also emphasized the collaborative spirit within the sector, where competitors share knowledge to foster collective growth.
The Agritech Unleashed Auckland event will feature founders and investors discussing their experiences with growth, investment, and scaling. A keynote address will explore the sector's future, examining the development of both highly successful startups ('unicorns') and foundational, reliable companies ('workhorses'), and the distinct requirements of each path.
Established agritech firms, including Levno, Trev, Farm Focus, and Figured, will share practical lessons learned from their operational histories, covering building, setbacks, adaptation, and perseverance. These insights often go unreported in typical funding announcements.
The event will also facilitate direct engagement between innovators and major New Zealand primary sector organizations. Representatives from Fonterra, Ravensdown, Silver Fern Farms, and Zespri are expected to attend, offering perspectives on technology adoption, value creation, and sector impact from the viewpoint of large-scale operations and extensive farmer relationships.
O’Connell stated that for these organizations, agritech is a critical factor in their operations, supply chains, and the farming communities they support. Their participation signifies a maturing sector that is becoming more integrated, strategic, and influential.
He further described New Zealand agritech's distinctiveness as stemming from its collaborative character, where companies compete while also sharing knowledge and experiences.
